My Top Records of 2022

Julia Jacklin – Revolution Hall – October 2, 2022

Dear Reader – Do you use Tidal to stream? If so, please enjoy the playlist I made from these tremendous records, here. In case you did not know, Tidal gives much more money to artists than any other streaming platform. Consider switching! It’s a great app and you will be supporting artists more fully.

Sudan Archives – Natural Brown Prom Queen

It’s usually a struggle for me to decide what my favorite record in any given year, might be. Not 2022. From the first moment I heard it, there was no doubt that “Natural Brown Prom Queen” would be at the top. The talent, brilliance and phenomenal creativity that emanates from this album will wrap you up, have you dancing, grooving and otherwise, blissing out when you listen. Don’t miss this one.

Robert Glasper – Black Radio III

The talent on this record is a little awe inspiring. From Glasper himself, to Q-Tip, Killer Mike, H.E.R, Ty Dolla Sign, Common, and so many more, it’s a rich glimpse into the divine nature of collaboration and music. I have not stopped listening to it since it was released. I encourage everyone to do the same!

Big Thief – Dragon New Warm Mountain I Believe in You

How could this record not be on my list? I don’t think there’s greater talent out there right now than these folks. Lenker is a master songwriter and allowing us to join in her poignant emotional journeys.

Ari Lennox – age/sex/location

In terms of what I listen to, Ari is at the absolute top of my streaming queue. Her voice is just gorgeous and the beats never miss. Check this full length out.

Sharon Van Etten – We’ve Been Going About this All Wrong

There’s no way Sharon Van Etten would not be on my list. It’s fair to say she’s one of my favorite artists of all time. I feel hugely lucky to have seen her last summer along with Julien Baker and Angel Olsen. I’m not sure there’s another artist that taps into my heart, more than her. Her latest record is brilliant, thoughtful and as always with her, we see what a tremendously talented woman SVE is.

Babehoven – Light Moving Time

This lovely little record is one the prettiest of the year. With sweet riffs and melodic vocals running through all of it, I am enchanted.

Beach House – Once Twice Melody

I’ve loved everything that Beach House has released. This is no exception. Allow yourself to drift into dreamy chords and dazzling melodies with them.

Melissa Carper – Ramblin’ Soul

In the last decade or so, I’ve become a lot more enamored by country music. I do prefer alt-country or old style, so discovering this artist was a thrill.

Preoccupations – Arrangements

I discovered this Canadian band through a partner that has impeccable taste in music. I love this record. It’s classified as post punk, but I hear tones of the 80’s new wave all over it, and I am so into it!

Alvvays – Blue Rev

It was beyond worth the wait to hear more from the incredible Alvvays. Their music feels upbeat, hopeful and their talent as musicians shines through in every track.

Julia Jacklin – Pre Pleasure

It’s possible that every time Julia Jacklin released a record, it ends up on my best of list. This Australian is a talent that just keeps getting better with time.

Rhett Miller – The Misfit

Rhett has been someone I’ve admired since first listening to his work with The Old 97’s back in the early 2000’s. This latest record of his feels a little different than previous releases. More dreamy, a little groovier.

Laura Veirs – Found Light

Portland artist Laura Veirs brings us yet another delicious record. I feel as though I’m walking through life with her as I listen to this brilliant release.

Angel Olsen – Big Time

I feel like this record takes us back to Angel Olsen’s roots. Gorgeous and mindful, this is a fantastic album.

Yeah Yeah Yeahs – Cool it Down

I don’t know about you, but I did not expect that The Yeah, Yeah, Yeahs would ever release another album. I was thrilled to hear new music from one of my favorites voices in music.

Tyler Childers – Can I Take my Hounds to Heaven?

More brilliance in the modern country scene comes in the form of Tyler Childers’ new release. Kick back on your front porch and have a listen.

Trupa Trupa – B Flat A

As an American, it’s easy to stay focused on all the music made here in the states. But then you’d be missing out on talent like Trupa Trupa. This deeply layered, dark and brilliant band hails from Gdansk, Poland and is absolutely one of my favorites of the year.

Ty Segall – Hello, Hi

It should come as no surprise to anyone who reads these yearly missives to see Ty Segall on this list. After his last, more electronic release, I am glad to see him return to the style I know and love so much.

Wombo – Fairy Rust

Listening to independent radio like XRAY out of Portland allows me to discover bands I might otherwise miss. This group out of Louisville, KY is one of my favorite finds of 2022. Enjoy!

Daniel Rossen – You Belong There

When you listen to this record, it’s clear that much of the talent behind Grizzly Bear lay within the heart and mind of Daniel Rossen. I was fortunate enough to see him play in Portland this year – I left feeling utterly mesmerized. I hope this record has the same effect on you.

The Smile – A Light for Attracting Attention

I feel fairly certain this album will make many top records of 2022, lists. As it should. Radiohead members coming together and creating more brilliance for us is not to be missed.

Warpaint – Radiate Like This

A truly great release from the very talented women of Warpaint. Layers of guitar and expansive chords will enthrall you.

HTRK – Death is a Dream

Yet again, looking outside the US and you will find brilliance such HTRK. Downtempo, heady and overall just so lovely. Add this Australian band to your queue.

Die Andere Seite – Epythmia

I admit that I first discovered the talent behind this band because I am a fan of the work of the German actor, Tom Schilling(band member). However, once I gave it a listen I was deeply impressed with this album. Expand your world view and give this a listen.

Lady Wray – Piece of Me

Oh, how I adore this record. Gorgeous vocals and beats to keep you feeling good all day long.

2020 Wasn’t All Horrible – AKA the best records of this strange year

There’s no need to delve into a diatribe about how weird/strange/lousy the year 2020 has been. At this point, it’s like saying the sky is blue. However, out of all darkness comes light. The light in this case, is the music that’s been created and released in 2020. While we can’t go to shows, we can still listen to, and love new music. Stay safe and see you all in 2021.

Albums are in Alphabetical Order, be sure to scroll down for EP and Single releases.

Blitzen Trapper – Holy Smokes Future Jokes

Eric Earley and crew have put out consistently beautiful music. Most of it makes me feel like rambling down a flower strewn path, hand in hand with someone I adore. The latest from Blitzen Trapper is no exception. Filled with stories, dreams and tales from the woods, you’ll dig this record.

Car Seat Headrest – Making a Door Less Open

Car Seat Headrest is one of the bands that immediately felt familiar when I first heard them, as though their slow chords and beats had always belonged in my head. They can stretch out a melody so brilliantly, its tendrils wrapping themselves around me, I never want them to let go.

Tyler Childers – Long Violent History

I’m the first in the line to tell you I don’t like bluegrass or modern country(not to be confused with Americana). Thankfully Tyler Childers fits into neither of these categories. His 2011 album, Bottles and Bibles, remains one of my favorites. This new album should give anyone pause who would lump everyone from the south into a single category. Take a moment to listen to what Childers is saying and then just enjoy the phenomenal fiddle and guitar.

Deep Sea Diver – Impossible Weight

One morning during the pandemic, DJ John Richards(of KEXP), was doing a live session from his house. I should say, outside his house, covid style. Deep Sea Diver came on and within moments, I was ordering the vinyl. I don’t know if it’s the lyrics, the melodies, or what, but I can’t stop listening to this incredible record. Jesssica Dobson has a long history of playing for other musicians, but lucky for us, she’s opened her heart here, for us all to get through life with.

On a side note, the commitment that KEXP has, to keep live music going, is a beautiful thing. I know it’s got to be beyond hard for musicians right now and I appreciate all that KEXP does. Proud to be a supporter for 15 years.

EOB – Earth

Thom Yorke has released a lot of good solo music, alongside the brilliant work of his band, Radiohead. When I heard bandmate, Ed O’Brien, was also putting out a solo, I was stoked. This record is all heart, from the energetic opener, to sweeter tracks like this one.

Fuzz – III

Would any of my best records of the year lists be complete without something from Ty Segall? It feels like eons since I saw Fuzz RIP IT UP a few years back. Everything these incredible musicians touch feels righteous, this new release is no exception.

Adrianne Lenker – songs

The latest from the front woman of Big Thief, feels like the space between awake and dreaming. That spot where you can touch the past, running your fingers over its sweet spots, allowing a smile to come, a tear to slide, but then, you’re asleep and the past remains where it should. Lenker lets us in to her space, covering us with music. Don’t miss this one.

Lianne La Havas – Self Titled

In the last two years, I’ve become hooked on neo-soul artists from the UK. From Jorja Smith, to Lianne La Havas, I just want more and more of it. This latest record from La Havas is filled with gorgeous grooves, bound to capture your mood. Her voice lingers, long after I listen to her.

Laura Marling – Songs for Our Daughter

Marling has made my lists before, with good reason. A deeply talented song writer and musician, her latest record is something to enjoy on a Sunday when you want to escape.

Mac Miller  – Circles

Posthumous releases are sad, but I’m glad this one happened. Miller was a deeply talented artist and I’ll take anything I can get from him. RIP, Mac.

Kevin Morby – Sundowner

With nods to Leonard Cohen and Bob Dylan, Morby takes us on a journey in his latest record. We’re wandering on an acoustic trail with him, his catchy chords and humble lyrics all we need. The isolation of the pandemic can be found here, just very beautifully.

Porridge Radio – Every Bad

Too often as people age, they remain fixed in the music they listened to when they were young. Nostalgia is a powerful part of our brains. This younger artist deserves your attention, even if your favorite jams peaked in the 90’s. Emotive, but with an edge, this band is excellent.

“I don`t want to get bitter, I want us to get better, I want us to be kinder to ourselves and to each other.”

Ana Roxanne – Because of a Flower

I’m not sure an ambient record has made my list before, but 2020 has been surreal, so it seems fitting. This is quiet interlude of an album made me feel as though I was time traveling, and that’s always a good thing.

 Moses Sumney – græ

I love the way Moses Sumney records make me feel. Hopeful, bright and relaxed. His earlier album, Aromanticism, has gotten serious rotation in my house. This latest record will turn the sun on, wherever you might be.

Soccer Mommy – color theory

I didn’t love the last release by Soccer Mommy, but think this one merits more attention. The hooks are there, and so are the open hearted lyrics, check it out.

Tan Cologne – Cave Vaults on the Moon in New Mexico

This is the second downtempo, dreamy record to make the list. With some ethereal grooves and heady notes, this album will leave you feeling chill.

Rufus Wainwright – Unfollow the Rules

I think Wainwright has one of the most beautiful voices out there. I just want to swirl around my kitchen when I hear him sing. This latest record is just gorgeous.

Gillian Welch – Boots No.1 and No. 2

For the full story about these records, see this excellent story in the NY Times, How Gillian Welch and David Rawlings Held Onto Optimism and then go out get both of them. Welch and Rawlings will have you toe tapping and singing all day with all these lovely little tracks. See also, their record, All the Good Times.

Various Artists – AngelHeaded Hipster: The Songs of Marc Bolan and T.Rex

I’ve always been a big fan of Marc Bolan. His boa filled swagger left this world too soon. This album is filled with stellar covers.

Laura Veirs – My Echo

I’m truly fortunate to live in a city with incredible musicians. The first time I saw Laura Veirs was at local music festival, PDX POP Now! Her quiet harmonies drifted over all of us, almost a whisper. In this latest album, she’s truly found her voice. The songs are an audio and visual pleasure, despite the sadness drifting out of some of them.

Top EP’s and Singles of 2020

Anderson .Paak – Lockdown

I can’t ever get enough of his music. Love this take on our current state of the world.

Big Joanie – Cranes in the Sky (Solange cover)

I love the song, and this cover is equally brilliant

Dinner Party – Self Titled

I debated putting this one up with the records, but it’s technically an EP. Robert Glasper, Kamasi Washington, Terrace Martin, and 9th Wonder have released just an incredible little EP. Funky, groovy and everything in between. Be sure to listen to this one.

Draze – The Main Thing

Excellent commentary on the year 2020

Khruangbin + Leon Bridges – Texas Sun

Hop in the car, roll down the window and give a listen to the perfect match of Leon Bridges voice and the beats that Khruangbin lay down.

Janelle Monáe  – Turntables

I think this might be the best song of the year. The lyrics are perfect(because didn’t the tables just turn?….election 2020…) and powerful. Turn this one up.

Arlo Parks – Caroline

I can’t wait to hear the full length record from this incredible UK artist. In the meantime, enjoy

Jorja Smith – Rose Rouge

When will Jorja release a new one? I listen to “Lost and Found” all the time, but it’s nice to get a few tracks while we wait for a full length.

Last Minute Additions

It can happen that I come across records AFTER I write the original list. Here goes.

Kali Uchis – Sin Miedo(del Amor y Otros Demonios)

I came across Kali Uchis, thanks to a recommendation from my streaming service, Tidal(I don’t like Spotify, they don’t give JACK $HIT to artists. Tidal gives them more $ and is partly owned by musicians. Make the switch, you’ll be glad you did.) Anyhow, Tidal knows how much I like Mac Miller and Anderson .Paak and sure enough this artist showed up on my feed. Her beats are fantastic, you’ll be moving when you listen, or the very least, feel energized. Me gusta mucho su musica!

Cleo Sol – Rose in the Dark

Just discovered yet another amazing neo-soul artists out of the UK. Cleo’s vibes are sultry, poignant and exactly where I want to be these days.
